When it comes to aged care, it’s the people who make all the difference – and few embody that better than Sue. Based in Inverell, NSW, Sue has dedicated an incredible 30 years to supporting older Australians through her work with McLean Care. What began as a chance opportunity has grown into a lifelong career filled with compassion, resilience, and commitment.

Sue fondly recalls her very first day with McLean Care – walking in for an interview and being hired on the spot to fill a maternity leave position. She started that same day and, as she says, has never looked back.

Starting out as an enrolled nurse in residential aged care, Sue’s journey through the organisation has been one of continual growth and adaptability. From night duty shifts to roles as a foot care nurse, trainer and assessor, clinical assistant, and team leader, Sue has embraced every opportunity with dedication and heart.

Today, she serves as a Home Care Coordinator, helping older people in the community live independently and with dignity in their own homes.

“McLean Care has always backed me,” Sue said. “They’ve trained me, supported me, and given me countless opportunities to grow. I’ve attended more seminars and courses than I can count – and I’ve loved almost every job I’ve had here,” she said.

Throughout her three decades of service, Sue has seen aged care evolve significantly, particularly in areas like work health and safety and clinical documentation. Yet, her passion for nursing and caring for older Australians has remained a constant.

“I’ve always loved listening to our older generation – their stories are incredible. And I love tailoring care packages to suit each individual’s needs and preferences,” she said.

When asked what she loves most about her job, Sue’s answer is simple but powerful: “When you’ve worked hard all day and a client calls just to say thank you – that means the world.”

Understanding the new Single Provider Model in aged care

The Federal Government is making changes to the way aged care services are organised under a new Aged Care Act which comes into effect on July 1. These changes introduce a Single Provider Model and a deeming process to help existing clients transition smoothly.

We understand that these updates may sound complicated, and you might be wondering:

Will this affect the care I receive?
Do I need to do anything?
Is this a change for the better?

The good news is that, as a McLean Care client, your services will continue as usual, and you don’t need to take any immediate action. Our team is here to guide you through the transition, keeping things simple and ensuring you continue to receive the care and support you need.

How does the new Single Provider model work?

Each client will have a single "main aged care provider". This provider is responsible for managing your funding, care planning and administration. They will oversee your overall care needs and ensure your services align with your approved support plan.
You can still receive care from multiple providers. If you need services from different providers (e.g., nursing from one, domestic assistance from another), your main provider will coordinate this for you.
If you are a new client after 1 July 2025, you will choose one provider to oversee your care. They may subcontract other providers to deliver specific services.

How will this affect McLean Care clients?

If you are an existing McLean Care client, you don’t need to do anything—your services will continue as usual. The government will automatically transition McLean Care into the new system through the deeming process.
If you currently receive services from multiple providers, your care arrangements may change slightly depending on how your providers choose to operate under the new system.

What do you need to do?

To ensure your services remain in place:

Check with your provider - Ask each provider how they plan to operate under Support at Home. Confirm whether they will continue delivering the same services.
Know your rights and options - You can still receive services from multiple providers, but your funding will be managed by one main provider. Some providers may expand their services, allowing you to consolidate care under one provider if you choose.
Look out for Government updates (from April 2025) - The Department of Health and Aged Care will send updates to all current clients about how the transition will work. This will explain any steps you need to take (if any).
Get support from My Aged Care - If you have questions about your care, call My Aged Care at 1800 200 422 for guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Will I have to change providers because of the new Single Provider Model?

No, you don’t have to change providers unless you choose to. If you are already receiving care from McLean Care, your services will continue as usual. The new model simply means that one provider will be responsible for managing your funding and care plan, but you can still receive services from multiple providers if needed. However, if your provider expands their services, you may have the option to consolidate care with them. If you want to move services, check if your preferred provider offers what you need.

What does the deeming process mean for me as a McLean Care client?

The deeming process means that McLean Care will automatically become a registered provider under the new system, so there will be no disruption to your services. You don’t need to do anything—your care will continue as normal.

What if I currently receive services from more than one provider?

You can still receive services from multiple providers under the new system. However, one provider will be your main provider, responsible for managing your funding and care plan. If you’re unsure how your providers will operate after 1 July 2025, it’s a good idea to check with them.

Can I change my main provider if I’m not happy?

Yes, you will still have the option to change providers if you find another provider that better suits your needs. My Aged Care (1800 200 422) can help you with this process if needed.

When will I find out more about how these changes will affect me?

The government will start sending official updates from this month onwards to explain how your care will transition. McLean Care will also keep you informed and guide you through any changes to ensure you continue receiving the care you need.

The new Act introduces a rights-based framework for the delivery of aged care, focusing on the rights of individuals accessing these services.

A rights-based framework in aged care means that the legal foundation of the new Aged Care Act is built around protecting and upholding the human rights of older people who receive aged care services. Instead of just focusing on what services are provided, the system will now be centered on what older people are entitled to and how they should be treated.

How is this different from before?

Previously, aged care was largely service-based, meaning that the focus was on what care providers offered, how services were delivered, and how they met regulations. While there were standards in place, the rights of individuals were not always at the core of the system.

2. Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards

The reform strengthens the Aged Care Quality Standards, aiming to support older people to live in their homes longer and improve funding arrangements for residential aged care.
