"There’ll never be another generation like them”: Nikki reflects on 20 years in aged care

 

After 20 years of working in aged care, Nikki still finds herself constantly fascinated by the people she supports.

“The generation we care for is so unique. What they’ve lived through, what they’ve witnessed - there’ll never be another generation like them,” she said.

It’s this deep respect and admiration that has kept Nikki committed to her role for two decades. As a Care Worker at McLean Care, she’s done everything from helping with everyday tasks like personal care and shopping, to leading aqua fitness classes, and joining social outings that took clients to Coffs Harbour, Lightning Ridge and beyond.

Throughout it all, her motivation has remained the same: to help people stay active, connected, and living independently in their own homes for as long as possible.

“Some of our clients don’t have anyone else. The connection we bring is so important - and they’re so grateful for it," she said. 

Over the years, Nikki has built genuine friendships and continued to learn from her clients, who she describes as some of the wisest people she’s ever met.

“I’ve learnt so much from my clients - and I continue to learn every day," she said. 

It’s not just the relationships that have made this a career she’s proud of. The flexibility of her work has also supported her through the years of raising a family and the variety of work keeps the role fresh.

Over 20 years, Nikki has built lasting relationships, witnessed change, and continually learned from the people she cares for. And while no two days are ever the same, she says the sense of purpose remains a constant.

“It’s a very rewarding career. I feel fortunate and blessed doing what I do.”
