How to get started

We know the aged care process can feel overwhelming at first, but you don’t have to go through it alone. At McLean Care, we’ll take the time to understand your needs, guide you through the steps, and support you in accessing the right care and funding - so you can keep living safely, confidently, and independently at home.

1. Contact us

Call us for a friendly chat. We’ll listen to your story, learn about your needs, and explain how aged care services work. Our team can introduce you to the range of support we offer and, if you’re not already connected with My Aged Care, we’ll help you get started and guide you through their assessment process.

2. Organise an assessment

You, or someone representing you (like a family member or carer), can apply for an assessment through My Aged Care.  My Aged Care is the Australian Government’s starting point for accessing aged care services and funding. They’ll help you understand what support you may be eligible for and organise an assessment. Call 1800 200 422 (free call) or you can complete an online application which is simple and takes about 15-20 minutes to complete.

3. Determine the level of care you need

During your assessment, My Aged Care will learn more about your situation, goals, and level of independence to determine the right type of care and funding for you.

Once your assessment is complete, you’ll receive a formal letter outlining what support you’re eligible for. Depending on your needs, you may be approved for:

  • The Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) – for entry-level, low-care support

  • The Support at Home Program – for higher, ongoing care needs

You can learn more about each program on our Funding Options page.

4. Start your services with McLean Care

Once your funding has been confirmed, we’ll help you take the next steps to get your care started.

If you’ve been approved for CHSP funding:
We can often organise your services over the phone or arrange a home visit depending on your location. We’ll confirm when your services will begin and from there, you’re on your way to living, feeling, and being well.

If you’ve been approved for the Support at Home Program:
You’ll have the flexibility to choose from McLean Care’s wide range of services. Your dedicated Care Partner will work with you to create a personalised plan that helps you live the best life possible at home.
